In the first year pupils study a broad range of art and architecture from Ancient Greece all the way to the end of the 20th Century. We also cover a range of themes including: subjects and genres, patronage, social status and many others.
The second year of the course focuses on two different art history periods in great depth. We study the 17th Century and the 18th Century.
History of Art requires no previous subject knowledge although an interest in art and/or architecture and an ability to read and write critically are essential.
History of Art is particularly suited to students who are also taking History, Classical Civilizations, RE, Foreign Languages and Fine Art. It should be stressed that this course does not involve any production of art but rather reading and writing about art.
History of Art, for those who are suited to it, can be a life-changing course. Many previous pupils have gone on to read the subject at University. We also take full advantage of the collections of art both in London and across Europe through frequent trips. Pupils often find the subject enjoyable and inspiring because it provides them with the knowledge and vocabulary to better understand the world around them.
